Grinding/Sqealing Noise when Hubs are Locked?
I have a 99 Quigley. Recently I've noticed that when my hubs are locked (4wd not engaged) I am getting a metal on metal squeal or grinding noise at low speeds. This noise only happens when the hubs are locked. I have experienced this same noise when 4wd is engaged and making a turn on dry pavement (I do not do this frequently).. Any idea what this could be?

Could be a # of things..... time to start unbolting parts to check everything!
Locking hubs, fluid, etc.

Finally got around to taking the van in. Ford says the noise is coming from the front calipers. They are replacing them this morning. Hopefully that's all it is.

That does not make sense.

I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Seemed a little weird to me but this dealer has worked on several similar 4x4 vans...

Re: Grinding/Sqealing Noise when Hubs are Locked?
Please do post all you find.
I have had mystery brake issues with my Quigley, and am very interested in whether there is a link. (In my case, the I did pads and turned rotors, then pads new rotors and calipers and brake lines. PO had replaced calipers within 10K miles of selling to me. Seems to be better now, but I haven't gone particlarly steep/long on the new parts).

Re: Grinding/Sqealing Noise when Hubs are Locked?
If it were the calipers, wouldn't you hear the same noise with/without hubs locked or being in 4WD, your brakes have the same rotational application either way. Assuming you have unit bearings up front, they are non serviceable and may be on the way out, you are most likely hearing those bearings, that would be my guess. As a preemptive upgrade option, I replaced my unit bearings with dynatracs free spin hub kit, serviceable and fully disengages the hubs for better mileage(if that's at all possible). Anyway, I hope that dealership isn't taking you for a ride, don't let them keep throwing parts on there until they figure it out, I thought the calipers could be adjusted? Good luck

I wish I was more mechanically inclined. I know a little but when it comes to strange noises I'm clueless. I have limited funds right now to get the van in shape for spring so I really hope these guys aren't trying to hose me. It's a pretty reputable dealership I think.... They also told me I have a leak in my brand new radiator (6 months old). I made them do the pressure test twice.. Now after this nonsense I have to take it to the place that put the radiator in.

Re: Grinding/Sqealing Noise when Hubs are Locked?
Ask them if their caliper swap doesn't fix the issue, if they'll cover the cost when the problem is still there, they should guarantee the work, esp if they're just throwing parts at it.
