Re: Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling
You can look at the term in many different ways, so much is just your point of view.
Wikipedia.com - Overlanding is the self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, but not exclusively, accommodated by mechanized off-road capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping; often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries. Historically, "'overlanding'" is an Australian term to denote the driving of livestock over very long distances to open up new country or to take livestock to market far from grazing grounds. Between 1906 an 1910 Alfred Canning opened up the Canning Stock Route.
Overlanding is an automotive adventure exploring remote locations where the journey is as much of an adventure as the destinations themselves. Overlanders are self-sufficient depending only on the gear they have packed and generally camp at their destinations.
Overlanding is not the same as offroading where you're confined to a geographical area and tackle difficult trails and obstacles. While overlanding can take place offroad, and most overland vehicles are equipped to tackle difficult conditions, overlanding is more about the trip to a destination, and overlanders will choose the easier route versus tackling the toughest trail to ensure they arrive at their destinations.
I like to think that overlanding can even be a road trip that might encounter a variety of terrains while traveling from point A to point B. Like going to Alaska. Rock climbing is what I consider technical off roading.

Cool, guess I've been overlanding since I was born. My parents called it camping. That's me in the chair.

Ive never even heard the term overlanding till this thread, but i like whats quoted above. that sums up our camping trips, and like Tapatio said, sounds like ive been overlanding my whole life (and that is a badass photo btw...).
round these parts the term "boondocking" gets thrown around a lot when you travel places roads or trails dont exist. i generally only hear it used when im around my sledhead buddies.

Re: Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling
Agreed.
Overlanding is simply car camping off the beaten path. No need for fancy description, classification or complex vehicles. Out in the middle of nowhere the smile on a Subaru driver's face is just as big as the guy in the Earthroamer.
"Overlanding" has created quite a stir as of late. It's all semantics.

Re: Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling
Thank you everyone for clarifying and for correcting my misunderstanding of the meaning of overlanding. Looking at the vehicles in the Overland Journal shaped my understanding of what it means.
Some Tiger owners believe their vehicles can go anywhere that any other vehicle can go. Others are more realistic about their capabilities and limitations. I was looking for some photos that show the capabilities of SMB.

Re: Need Links To Pics: SMB Rock Crawling
This was our maiden voyage 4 wheeling in our new 2009 EB, SMB. March 2010.
The three steps going thru Steel Pass from Eureka Dunes to Saline Valley.
This was a very enjoyable trip.
