Re: Racetrack Playa mystery in Death Valley solved
This was sort of a Don McLean 'Day the Music Died' moment when I read that they actually saw the rocks move...
We were out there at Thanksgiving but couldn't make it out to the rocks as half the playa was covered in snow while the half with the stones was covered in water. I had my own theory that as the sun started to melt the ice on half the lake, the pressure of the remaining ice would squeeze a layer of brine towards the water side of the lake and give just enough additional float to the little stone icebergs to let them drift in the wind.
Still looking forward to watching the kids come up with their own theories when we make it back out there.
