25th Anniversary! North Rim 2WD boondocking suggestions mid-Sept

It's our 25th anniversary next month. We've been talking for a while about what to do...maybe back to Mexico where we got married? Or Hawaii? Or Europe? Or throw a big party for friends and family? So many choices!

Well...no.

But hey, at least we've got the Sportsmobile! My wife has never been to the Grand Canyon, and I was only there once when I was 10...and it was cloudy and rainy the whole time.

There are abundant threads on the subject, but most all deal in 4WD trip reports and advice...we've got a 2WD EB E250...

Of course I've read about the boondocking off the FS roads adjacent to the north entrance. I've also been intrigued by Parashant...love the reports of trips to Toroweep, but that also sounds inadvisable for 2WD (at least the last bit).

We will be coming from the west, and maybe can stretch it all the way to Page...but would love any suggestions of feasible boondocking spots with a view.

Any comments on how busy to expect it to be during these covid times? Hoping North Rim and mid-Sept might cut down on critical mass...but who knows?

Thank you!

Blaine

Blaine,

If the weather is dry you should be able to take a 2WD EB250 to Toroweap. I've seen regular passenger cars all the way out at the end. Most of the road is well graded. The last short slick rock section doesn't have any big drops or steps. Just take it slowly watching carefully your path. When it is wet it is a different matter. But that's true even if you have 4WD.

We were there last September and had beautiful weather and saw very few people. Our trip report with photos and video links may help you see the area and roads you will be driving through. Many of the roads on the north rim are drivable with your vehicle. The top of Mount Logan has a nice camp spot. If you are careful with your tire placement you should be able to make it to Toroweep and Kanab Point. I saw a couple of un lifted pickups at Toroweep.

Been to Toroweap many times. As others have said, if there has been no rain/snow recently then you should have no problems. But remember you are driving at least 60 - 90 miles (one way) on dirt roads so make sure you have good 10 ply tires on your rig.

Hi folks, thanks for the replies, looking to head out end of next week. Doing further research I continue to see so many possibilities! Thank you Larrie for the idea of Kanab Point, hadn’t thought of that one...looks tricky to get to and very little online.

Also, a little closer to the national park, any comments from folks on 2WD EB doing the road to Point Sublime, both the direct route from park HQ as well as the longer “back way” coming in from the north? Reading various online comments it ranges from “4WD absolutely needed” to “I made it in my mustang convertible rental”

Also thinking maybe Locust point, which looks easy to get to, and also watched a great vid on the road to Twin Point in Parashant.

Sorry for the long list of places...but it’s a long list of places

Thank you!
