Cape Disappointment, WA 2/1/2014
Things finally calmed down after the holidays, new year, and SEAHAWKS SUPERBOWL WIN, YEAH! So we went out for a little camping. It was supposed to snow in Seattle, which we were excited about and were afraid we might miss, but we had the feeling that we might get a little down South too since Portland and Astoria were getting hammered.
On the way down we saw some pretty cool frozen waterfalls on US101 just before Aberdeen.
Just outside of Ilwaco, we got into some snow. The van did awesome. I kept waiting for the chance to pull someone out of a ditch, but alas, not this trip.
We camped at Cape Disappointment State Park (formerly Ft. Canby). They have a 290 site campground that I can imagine gets packed in the summer. But since it's winter and snowing, there were only three of us. Naturally, they put us in adjacent sites. Luckily the sites were ~100 ft from the beach.
We headed into town and ate a fantastic dinner at The Depot. The Crab Mac & Cheese ruled the table, but the Thai Calamari was pretty awesome too.
In the morning, we headed back down to the beach for some more lookin-round.
We found some wreckage from an old motorboat, some mussel shells, and a dead starfish. Also a ton of huge driftwood.

Re: Cape Disappointment, WA 2/1/2014
After breakfast, we saddled up and drove out on the South jetty. Not too much to see there besides ocean, so we parked at the trailhead for the Cape Lighthouse and started hiking. Found this cool tree on the trail.
Also this cool cove. Apparently the Coast Guard station on the Cape says you can't walk down there or boat into it.
We got up to the lighthouse and had a great view across the Columbia to Astoria.
The lighthouse is pretty cool.
The Seaman on duty at the lookout station was pretty stoked to have some visitors so he let us and our dogs into the booth to use his binoculars and look at maps and stuff.
We checked out the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center, but honestly, it's not worth the $5 each. The Battery Harvey Allen is pretty cool, but its a bit sanitized and not as cool as Fort Worden.
We headed out to the beach to drive around and have some lunch.
We let the dogs out and they had a blast.
The boy took the wheel for a while since it's sand and there was no one around.
On the way home, we drove over the bridge to Astoria (awesome) and then back into WA at Longview (also awesome). Then it was a rainy drive back to Seattle.

A gorgeous trip. My wife and I have driven up the Oregon and Washington coasts twice (without our SMB). Cape Disappointment is one of our favorite spots. We even have a Christmas Tree ornament to remind us this place.

The best, and only, way to watch Twilight, courtesy of "Bad Lip Reading"

Nice pictures. Funny, with all the coastline around here I've never been to a lighthouse. I just got to get to the Oregon Washington area one of these days. California is stingy with beaches you can drive on.

I never went to a lighthouse when I lived in CA, but I saw a couple from afar. I think this beach (Seaview to Oysterville) is the only one in WA you can drive on, but according to a couple books I have, at 15 miles long, it's the longest drivable beach in the world.
The sand there was a lot firmer and flatter than Pismo and there's no dunes.
Re: Twilight- Haven't seen it, but my wife is also a fan. I know the story is mostly set in Forks, which is on the Northeastern part of the Olympic Peninsula. There are some beaches up there that look similar to this (large driftwood and whatnot). Cape Flattery is one of our next destinations.
