CO Rockies Trip Suggestions: Imogene?

Wife and I are taking off for a month and spending one of those weeks in the rockies. We will be solo so I dont want to get too gnarly, but some dirt road action in the rockies sounds pretty great. Any suggestions? Imogene Pass came up and looks amazing. Curious to see how other SMBs handled it.

Imogene... she's a biotch. Lots of loose stuff the past couple of years.

I did Imogene like 25 years ago in my Isuzu Trooper, starting in Telluride. Fine to the summit, but the backside scared the crap out of me. It was snowing (late September) and super slippery. The truck literally slid and dropped a foot or so off rock steps a few times. My wife was not happy. As we came down below snow line we saw some Jeeps come up and then turn around when they saw the snow. In retrospect we probably shouldn’t have been on there, but we were committed at that point and it was impossible to turn around.

Looks like you are based pretty close to that area too, so your advice carries weight! Have you taken your van up there recently?

Way more fun on a moto! Long way in a van.

No way would I do it in my van. 4x4 SMB diesel but the slippery crappy shale on the north/east side scares the crap out of me. Last time I did it was in a side by side and it was tough with that up the Ouray side. You'd have more fun on other stuff.

Check out the Enchanted Rockies Trail.

Also, TRAILSOFFROAD has some great trails. The nice thing about them is they rate the trails for difficulty and have detailed write-ups on the trails.

Don't let a couple comments scare you off, go and enjoy the view.
I did it in 2013 in my EB SM solo, with no issues. I only found a couple of switch backs I needed to do multiple point turn. It is done all the time in full size vehicles. Try to do it mid week so not as busy, less chance of meeting someone on the trail coming the other way, it is very narrow in some places.

I know it is not a trail, but we went over Cottonwood Pass, newly paved but well worth considering.
