Try 33.023260, -116.110886; I got that from what looks like the camp in the sat view on Google Maps.

Re: So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012
Well...
I sure wanna join y'all but here's what's on my mind:
I'm 10 thousand pounds or so, two wheel drive, and not what one would call "high ground clearance."
This will be our first real outing in the new rig, and Mrs. SteveW is more prone to RV Parks than to a site like Fish Creek. I'm hoping that this experience changes that opinion - but if we get stuck...
The posted pictures sure make it look doable in 2wd - if it truly is hard packed dirt. Loose sand is prolly a problem though - unless momentum will get me through. Yikes !!
Maybe I'm worrying about nothing - or maybe I'll be providing the opportunity to show off your winches.
Anyone else travelling in on Saturday?? Maybe we'll caravan.
I've got a work related Holiday party on Friday 12/7 - otherwise I'd be down earlier.
Comments and advice are certainly appreciated.
Thanks !!
Steve W

That is the same area as the desert Rendewiew last year and if stayed off the main two track on the left you could do it but some spots are deep silt. I'm on the fence between this and the toys for tots in Gorman.

Re: So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012
SteveW,
Your concerns are valid. I've been to this area a few times over the past 25 years. Split Mtn road, which leaves the main road and gets pretty close to the campsite, is flat and fairly wide. It is mostly hardpack gravel with some softer spots, but little of the really soft beach-like sand. It is different every year, too. I'm betting you will do fine with lower tire pressure, and of course with all of us in the vicinity to aid if necessary.

I have on-board air to get anyone inflated and back on the road as well.

Re: So Cal SMB winter meet up 2012
I don't have a winch, but I am bringing a tow strap along. I'll have a compressor along as well, but it's not a 100% duty cycle compressor, so airing up may take a while.

Everything form 2WD Minivans to Prius' camp up in there - you won't have a problem. And there will be plenty of help.

I just hope I can make it. If I'm gonna go, I really don't want to drive through LA by myself. I'm tryinng to get my buddy Don to go but he needs to diiscuss it with his wife. Everybody else is tied up for Christmas stuff plus I want to stay a week if I go. Waiting on my rear box to be repaired and it needs to go to the powder coater... that's pushing it. So all I can say is we'll see.
How many plan to stay past Sunday? Oh, and is there a forecast for good weather during that week?
Dave
