Ladder mounted on side door

Have many mounted a ladder on the side door? I saw one on the Rage (?) van in the gallery. It was mounted on the rear side door. I was thinking of the front side door so it would not bump into the van when the door opened (btw-is there a strap to stop the rear side door from opening all the way?)

Anyway, from my rear bumper, to the top of my spare tire, it is an easy climb up the back of the van. My basket is mounted forward. I found through trial and error that it was better to have a nice large standing surface for packing the basket once I climbed on the roof. With the forward mounted basket, I could use a forward side ladder.

Bad idea? Any pics appreciated.
