Re: My Bike Rack Solution

Yes, but just haven't gotten around to formally offering it up yet. I guess you are first in a line of one. It would definitely be for pick up only. No way I'd try to figure out how to ship it.

PM me and we can work on the details.

Thanks -
Phil

Re: My Bike Rack Solution

that's super clean!!! I've been trying to decide what I wanted to do, looking for regular solutions but none i was really happy with.

did you put the hitch on the left swing arm because of this reason?

I can now check that project off my list (except I need to buy one or two add-ons for the 1upUSA bike rack so I can carry up to 3 or 4 bikes).

any worries with 3 or 4 bikes on there with the swing arm open? that's gonna be a lot of weight!
especially if you had 4 downhill bikes on there. could have maybe had the rack on the right side to distribute the weight out a bit?

my initial solution was to use the MWE Rack - bladerunner

the MWE swing out is about $550 and is suppose to be limited to 4 bikes,
thinking your custom solution is probably more costly but likely more durable?

Chaos -

I like that swing out. Hadn't seen it before.

I put it on the left swing arm because I wanted to return to the stock right swing arm. The third pivot location just happened to work out for a latch point.

I've only carried 2 non-downhill bikes and it was fine. I think a third tray / bike will be fine, but 4 may be too much.

I'll reply to your PM with your other questions.

Phil

Any 7 seems to have folded.

No phone service, web domain for sale, etc.

Bummer. That swing arm receiver is so dope!

How's it holding up BTW?

Thanks.

That's a bummer. Swing arm / Rack is still holding up well!! I'm sure you could find someone else to fabricate one.

Artisan Metalworks in Flagstaff could pull something off like that. For a price.

And just an FYI for those interested in aluminess swing-away racks, they are no longer making the bike specific version. The weight limit was 150lb and they were getting too many failures/repairs with folks overloading the arm.

On my rack I had Aluminess extend the arms a bit so the 1upUSA trays would not have to extend more that 14" or so over the spare tire. I carry two bikes, 3 Scepter grunts, and a Solaire grill in the box. Weight is ~125lb.

Do you know where the failure point(s) were that they were seeing? I did a visual on mine the other day and see no sign of over stress on the Aluminess bumper mounting points for my custom swing arm.

When I talked to the Aluminess guys at the Expo I showed him my rig since it was parked nearby. I had assumed it was the strap going to the hinge on the cargo door but he said the failures were occurring in the pivot on the arm itself. It might be worth a call to pin it down. I recently took mine apart and lubed the elastomers as they were squeaking pretty bad and all the bolts were loose so I'm glad I dug into it.
