Replacing front cabinets with cabover slide out bed??
I can't seem to find any record or threads of anyone doing this but it seems like a no brainer. I have a super camper high top on my SMB with the large front cabinet but need an extra bed. I'd like to take the cabinet out and install a slide out bed. Is it as easy as I'm thinking or am I missing something? Anyone ever do this?
If you end up doing this and can salvage the cabinet, I’d buy it from you. I’m up in Boise. I’d even take just some pics of how it attaches on the inside. Looking to make as mine is open right now.

Coachmen made a camper van with a similar (if not the same) top, and did have an optional bed up front there. Not a great pic, but there is one in the gallery of this example: https://www.smartrvguide.com/L52291132
Pretty easy mod really. The carpentry and trim is pretty basic. The upholstered bed sections, unless you just do a solid mattress, will probably be the only thing you need to farm out. Upholstery shops are generally very slow. If you need this done soon I would get on someone's list as soon as you have measurements.
Its been a while since OP has replied to this thread but I'll offer IF the upper C-pillar has been removed accommodating taller E-Series rear doors there is or should be portions of the "roll cage" present above the front seats. If that's the case there might be scant little room in the now-present cabinets under discussion.
Just sayin' since I have the raised roof & tall rear doors on two of my E-Series.
My previous vw 'adventurewagen' had this feature, but it slid forward from the back. I think they did make an econoline based adventurewagen but it was really just a sheet of wood that slid forward and rested on some sheet metal, with some 2x guides/stoppers. Pretty simple.
