Hi Carringb,

Thanks for the info.

I just put a meter on the alternator before it goes to the isolator. I'm getting 11 volts at idle. What does that indicate (would have thought a faulty alternator would provide zero volts, but that was just a guess).

All the connections are clean and snug, I just double-checked them. The wiring isn't as bad as I had previously thought, but the lead to the starter is a little janky. This won't affect the alternator, of course.

Thanks,

capn

I checked the sense wire coming from the alternator to the isolator and made sure it was making good contact. It's all set. I'm guessing the alternator is the culprit here, so I'll replace that next.

Thanks,

capn

Alternator was indeed the problem. Getting it rebuilt at Broadway Auto Electric in Lemon Grove.

They still rebuild alternators? I can't find any old school places that do that anymore where I am. Just FYI parts stores will still bench test starters and alternators if you pull it off and take it in to them, free of charge. Advance does, anyway.

Yep, this place rebuilds the whole thing, only using your old front and rear cases. If the fan is still good they might reuse that as well. They benched it for me to confirm the suspected.

rare anymore and it sucks. the parts arent near as good as they used to be.

were lucky, we have a place here that still rebuilds starters and alternators. they also sell all kinds of brushes for starters and alternators. individual brushes are usually under 3-4 bucks a pop. so rebuilding say a honda starter is under 10 bucks for parts. i love that place.

Capn, looks like I missed all the excitement. I'm glad you got it worked out.
