DIY propane tank?

I have this 6 gallon aluminum tank that came off of a public bus for their air brakes. I’m wondering if it could be made into a propane tank. Has anyone heard of this? Is it a crazy idea? This tank is really nice and has a lot of bungs welded into it.Click image for larger version

Are you planning on filling it yourself? If it's not certified, LPG suppliers won't fill it. Permanently mounted tanks are ASME certified, portable tanks are DOT certified and are subject to periodic recertification.

Certification is there for a reason, safety.

Put me down on the side of this being an ill-advised project. There are tons of other projects that this would lend itself to.

Given that I found a total of zero hits on google I figured it was crazy and impossible.

They do sell certified propane tanks made from aluminum, so there shouldn't be a propane-aluminum compatibility or reactivity issue. I've done a few 'on the edge' things, but welding together my own propane tank is sketchy by even my standards, LOL!

I found a used 7 gallon Manchester local to me on this site a few years ago. It had some California surface rust, the guy didn't want to hassle with it, and just bought a new one through Sportsmobile. I was happy to give him $200, wire wheel, sand, and paint it myself. The install and super-duper-custom access door is about finished.

Agreed.....way too much risk........

There is plumbing going on inside the propane tank as well, overfill protection....venting..etc.

And, as mentioned nobody will fill that... not to mention your liability in the event of a serious accident.

Find a DOT certified tank.

That is a nice tank, I can see trying to utilize it for something.

My propane tank is rated for 312 psi.

Don’t even think about it.
