Could a universal pump be retrofitted in an emergency? This one looks cheap enough to carry as a spare:

On edit: I just noticed the description actually says Ford diesel. And being a Dorman part, it may be the actual OEM part.

Probably is and there is a clue. Notice it doesn't work w the 1999 7.3. Ford branded a 2000 model it only did a few trim changes. The 2000 model year mechanical upgrades went out beginning Dec 1998. They needed to make a ton of improvements to the 7.3 and transmission they put out Aug 1998. For lots of reasons they couldn't wait, ergo, the 1999.5 model.

Mine was built March 1999. I called Ford in Oct asking whichod year manuals and parts I should buy. They said 1999 for body and chassis and some wiring, 2000 for engine, trams, and related stuff. they made it clear the "2000" 7.3 came out Dec 1998.

The pump you found was designed to work on that engine and not the original upgraded 7.3 sd Aug-Nov 1998.
