Total shut-down while driving
I was making a turn from a turning lane onto a side road between Goldfield and Tonopah last week and midway through the turn my engine shut down completely, total loss of power. No warning. I was able to complete the turn (without power steering) and pull over. I then put it in park and turned the key off. A moment later I turned the key and everything came back on again like nothing was wrong.
After getting home to SLC I've not driven it, but plan to take it to a mechanic today. But I wondered if anyone had thoughts about causes. I've had previous problems with the throttle and filters causing hesitation during acceleration(fixed, mostly), but this was just a total shutdown, creepy when it happened.
By the way, there's an awesome hot spring just off Silver Peak road.

What motor? In my case, sudden death of the motor was caused by the fuel pump in the tank. I replaced a couple actually. Good luck..........

Check your battery terminals. A momentary loss of of connection can kill the motor, especially if the alternator was not generating because it was running too hot from compensating for the loose connection.

Missing some pertinent info.
As mentioned, what motor, any gadgets, bolt-ons, reflash, obd2 stuff?

It's a 2001 E-350 V8, 5.4lt. I'll check the terminals now.

Everything seems to work just fine now, visible connections look solid. But it kind of leaves you wondering if and when it could happen again. I'm going to test-load a pic here too just to see if I've re-mastered how to do that.

My 2001 5.4 did the exact same thing a few times. After a few stalls / no starts over a period of a couple months, it suddenly gave up completely, requiring a tow. Check the output pressure for the fuel pump. There is a fitting on the fuel rail you can screw a gauge to and you can borrow a gauge from an auto parts store. I think minimum pressure is about 20lbs but don't quote me on that. I've replaced the pump more than once, it's a pretty crappy design and I now carry a spare.

I got it. You've been putting gas in your 6.0 diesel thinking it was a 5.4l. Put gas in it from now on. 5.4's don't break.
However, if it did, it's probably the fuel pump.

I have to agree with you that the 5.4's don't break. Diesels on the other hand Oops, I've done it again, will I get banned if I keep bashing diesels?
