they may not break much, but they will blow to pieces! when they do, they usually "vent" the block, by blowing a hole in the side of the block down by the crank.

My 7.3 just did this yesterday. Same symptom, shut off, however I was going straight. All the dash lights came on like it shut off. Turned the key off and back on. Started no issues. No problems today. Almost seemed like the key shut it off but it was still in the run position.

Quite possibly the Cam Position Sensor (CPS). Can exhibit the symptoms you describe, and the next thing you know it will fire right up.

I'm proud to say I've killed one 7.3 (at least) lol
As for the problem at hand, have you checked all the connections going to the computers and main fuse block? Physically hands on ?
Sure seems like a loose connection...

I have a 1997 7.3 diesel. It had the same symptoms a few weeks ago. Engine threatening to stall, and actually stalling, starting back up... almost always, then run for variable time before stalling again. Typical symptoms of a failing camsensor... but I had a relatively new camsensor (2000 mi) and that one replaced a camsensor with only 1500 mi. So, something else was going on. Turns out it was the electrical connector of camsensor. Pins had widened and intermittently did not make contact. Bending pins, electrical grease solved the issue temporarily, but I will replace the connector.

I put a new dark blue cps in 2 weeks ago. Keeping the grey one as an emergency backup. Hope it's not going bad on me already. Also checked all the connections, looks to be good.

Well I am sitting back watching this post hoping to see if anything comes up that will help me. I posted awhile back about losing power while driving. I am stilling having the problem after dealing with a ford rep who stopped responding and a dealer who gave up. The only thing the dealer did was check all connections and replace a gauge cluster none of it fix the problem. When checking for codes nothing ever shows up. I got busy with life and now have time to try and get to the bottom of what is going on.
I am going to go back to ford and try to get them to help figure it out not, sure how much help they will be.
My van is a 2003 E150 EB with a 5.4. The engine will shut down and all dash light come on. If you are moving fast enough the engine will start right back up while coasting other times if you are moving slowly you pull over and put it in park and restart it with the key. This only happens once in the first few minutes of start up and never does it again. It is so radom it can be weeks or months before it does it and then it might do it a couple times during a week and nothing for a while.

Definitely sounds like an open circuit. I'd be suspicious of a ground strap somewhere being loose, but I'd also check the "bolted" wire harness connections. These ones are critical, and a loose bolt can cause that. The engine main harness has one bolt at the front of the motor, and there's also a bolt on the PCM connector on the firewall. There's more I'm sure, but those are the ones I've dealt with.

i would install a fuel pressure gauge, to see what FP does when it stalls. might help solve the problem or at least cross fuel delivery to the rails as a cause.
my 03 f150 wouldn't start yesterday when i went to leave work. FP gauge showed 0 psi. that helped me diagnose it quick.
