Re: Tools for making a fire.
Bic lighters. I keep about a dozen salted around everywhere; glove box, door pockets, toolbox, day pack, kitchen drawer, etc. There is always one at hand. That plus scrap paper and squaw wood usually does it. If it's too wet or windy to start a fire with that then screw it - fire up the furnace and cook on the inside stove.

Re: Tools for making a fire.
I keep a fuel bottle of white gas, and a few old editions of the Sunday NY Times. A few wads of the newsprint, about 1/2 cup of white gas, a little pyramid of wood, and, making sure I'm upwind, toss a match and WHOOOMP! It's a fire.

Re: Tools for making a fire.
Several years ago:
I guy in our area always started a fire in his living room fireplace with a cup of gasoline. His wife one day was having a lunch party and thought a fire in the fireplace would be nice. She brought a gas can in the house poured a cup on the wood just like hubby and then went into the kitchen to get a match. Not sure if she used more or less then her husband but in any case by going into the kitchen she did wait a minute or two before striking the match. Sure you can picture what happened...the living room fire ball. In her fright thought she better get that gas can out of the house quickly. So she grabbed it up and ran out the front door. Only problem was the cap was still off and she carried the can up side down.

And that's why we have "no spill" gas cans, regardless that they actually leak all over the place when you try to use them.

Re: Tools for making a fire.
The Fire Pistons are kind of neat idea but I wonder about the ease and practicality of capturing the Char Cloth Ember and transferring it to my chosen tender , it couldn't be of any size if it fits within the piston ! Anyone tried one yet ? If for no other reason I thought that I might buy one for teaching my Grandchildren another way of fire building .

Re: Tools for making a fire.
Curious on how it would work with steel wool or a gas stove. For me it would be a last ditch effort tool. A good windproof waterproof lighter is my first choice for a bug out bag.

Re: Tools for making a fire.
I grab some of the free newspapers that are always by the door at gas stations and keep a few barbecue lighters stashed around the rig.
