14"x14" is the universal hole size. They all fit in it, and I'm pretty sure the Fantastic vent is no higher than a Heng's or similar, if so only an inch or so. I would recommend the Maxxair but it is bigger. I'm currently trying to get comfortable with how it might look on my regular top van myself. Perhaps a roof rack will disguise it some.

You keep mentioning "lower profile" do you have any dimension information? Fantastic Vent offers both flat or arched dome lids.

Get the flat lid fantastic fan. For reference, four wheel camper installs them on the roof so you can see how low they are.

Thanks for the pointer, I have been looking for something small for a while now. There's an AC in my 14x14 opening and I don't want to swap it for a fan every time I camp without power.

The shroud for the motor was a bout 2-3 in. high the the lid on top of that, stuck up close to 6 in.

Good thread. Made me measure my fan, something I have wanted to do for a number of years. Have not looked at Fantastic Vents in 10+ years but pics of current ones indicate a more low profile motor. Do not know anything about lid. Well have to check one out at an RV store sometime.

The newer Fantastic Fans/vents are about two inches higher than what Len measured. I have one of each on my roof. Not sure why they did this but they did.

Looks like the change in the Fantastic Vent height is another reason to go for a Maxxair. Only 9.3" raised and only 5" closed, which is only .5" higher than the older, lower profile Fantastic Vent.

Short film on Fantastic Vent. He says 4.5" and 11.5" so I was close.

Found some pics. "high" and "low" let them shift the mechanism upward for more INTERIOR clearance to the black crank knob. Now I understand but have not seen any reference to this option in their catalog. So with ample head room like I have with the penthouse and no concern for inside head clearance "low" of my older design is good.

The last time I looked at the fantastic fan website they didn't show the flat lid vents/fans for some reason. I don't have my camper any more but I'd say it was less than 2" over the roof line when closed. Roughly equal to my solar panels mounted on Yakima rails.
