Re: Swiss Build V.2

OK here is a less decorative part of the conversion:

Fitting battery tray under the chassis for the 2 auxiliary batteries... so far fitted a couple of right angle irons to the frame using OEM holes like the OEM tray would... but not OEM

I used an extra strong locking compound to make sure the bolts won't come loose:

I used a cable and string to pull the bolts trough the chassis (the other side of the rail is the fuel tank...)

Ground clearance no problem as the exhaust pipe muffler hangs about an inch lower... and with 2WD no rock crawlin'

More to come...

Re: Swiss Build V.2

Lookin' good Saabman. The battery mount project is interesting to me as I am just in the beginning stages of my build. I plan on mounting a propane tank on the drivers side frame rail as well. If there is not enough room for the house batteries on that side I plan on mounting them in the spare tire location as soon as I figure out a spare tire mount system. Keep up the good work, and the more pictures, the better.

Re: Swiss Build V.2

Good stuff. Got to question that battery support though. OEM should be a box, with just the L brackets I'm afraid that the movement from the battery on the foot of the L will break off that corner (ever bent metal back and forth to break it?)

I think it needs support around the top of the battery to keep it from moving and weakening the L corners. It also seems like those nuts would punch into the side of the battery (unless it is going in a box). Either way make sure to tie the top end of whatever is holding the battery weight to the frame so it doesn't flex your supports.

Re: Swiss Build V.2

Have no fear jage, the battery project is on hold...
There will be adequate support for the batteries, the set-up will not be L but more like a U and a tray. Proper battery ties will be used too...
All in due course

Re: Swiss Build V.2

Ok gals and lads
News from Europe:

I started my long awaited electrical installation. I am starting with a shore power plug direct into the van with 240 Volts. Then I will be having a battery charger for the 2 auxiliary batteries (still to be purchased and fitted on those dubious mounts Jage). The charger will be able to charge any of the 3 batteries (2 aux 1 starter) when in a camp-site with shore power through a 3 way switch.

Ok enough talk pics:
