Cruise Contol Downshifting

While driving with CC on at 75 mph [give or take] and going up a steep grade the transmission will automatically down shift in order to maintain speed. Recently when doing this and when the steep grade is over the transmission will stay in the downshifted mode and will not return to normal. Sometimes it will correct itself after awhile and other times I have to depress the gas pedal to the floor several times to get it to return to normal.

Any thoughts?

If you turn the CC off, I assume the transmission returns to normal gear? It may still think it needs to be in the passing gear just to maintain 75mph if you are still going uphill at all.

My van does this regularly on uphill grades......5.4L 3.73 gearing and 285/70-17 tires......it's slightly annoying....I shut off the cruise control at the first downshift and use some "gas pedal english" to get the trans to upshift again...or not downshift further if the grade is steep.

The cruise control is not nearly as smart as a human with a right foot.

It's a symptom of tall gearing.....

Thanks guys.
I'm not sure if I've turned off the CC when it does this. I don't think I have. Its been doing it for awhile and seems to be getting worse. The transmission certainly stays downshifted for a long time after a steep grade is over. Usually does not quit without "punching" the gas pedal and quickly releasing, often several times.

Quite normal....that's why I turn off the cruise when the van first downshifts with CC on....

Where are you at on scheduled maintenance? Especially filters and plugs? Very likely your van is requiring more throttle for the same speed, which can cause CC to hold a lower gear.

Heck...
My van will very rarely ever down shift and when it does it has to be a huge mountain. I guess it's a bonus of the 7.3 Gobbs of torque!
But it returns to the correct gear needed.

As mentioned above, maybe it's lacking power and trying to hold the gear to compensate?

Oil and filter changed every 3000 miles. I only have 72000 on it and no spark plug change yet. I believe 100,000 is the magic # on tune-up. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Gearing I don't know.
Tires are BFG AT T/A LT285/75R16
