I was told when my 4X4 was done to use EDIT: SHOULD BE 85W-140 (NOT 75-140); fully synthetic to keep it running cooler and with no additives because I have air lockers.

My understanding is that the Ford Limited Slip needs the Friction Modifier. YMMV

A locker doesn't need a friction modifier, a limited slip usually does. The factory Ford option is a limited slip, Angel has an aftermarket locker installed.

Truetracs don't need a fricion modifier either. I think Angel has a truetrac in front and a locker in the rear. I'm running two truetracs. Or will be as soon as I get the drive shafts balanced on Friday

For kicks and giggles, I contacted Dynatrac and they don't recommend synthetics. They recommended Lucas 85w140 dino oil. I inquired about extra heat from towing and the tech suggested going to a finned aluminum rear diff cover.

The guys at the 4x4 shop in town also recommended Lucas Dino oil and believe synthetic has no place in differentials because synthetic gets thin when hot. They also didn't think highly of Royal purple.

Gnarvan, you are right about my SMB having TruTrac and ARB lockers.

ARB Air Locker Service guide recommends synthetic lubricant: Shell Spirax and Mobil Mobilube. The weight of oil depends on the outside temperature and type of use.

You guys need to say which diff you have, the Ford Sterling diff is different from the Dana 60 etc.

Having given this more thought and research I'm not convinced on the cost-benefit of synthetic in differentials. Dynatrac doesn't recommend synthetic in the Proroc60 and prefers to use a dyno lube similar to Torco or Lucas 85-140.

Add a friction modifier for a limited slip diff if needed. I'd rather take the cover off and change out the fluid every 20,000 or 25,000 miles. That's also the recommended interval for the Atlas transfer case. Is there anyone here that is willing to go 50,000 to 100,000 miles without changing the differentials? That's partly why synthetics are recommended. Same with Ford Coolant. Change at 100k.

You can find a quart of Lucas HD 85-140 online for $6.50 which is 1/3 the cost of the Purple stuff or Amsoil Extreme.
