Tires and Rims Question

OK, this is probably a dumb question, but I was wondering:

I've seen many of you (especially those w/ 4x4), opt to get different tires put on your SMB. Kind of like fatter, bigger, all terrain knobby tires. They certainly look "cooler" on the 4x4, and I'm sure they increase off-roading performance...

but do these tires fit onto the original E-x50 van's rims, or do you have to upgrade to bigger/wider rims, too?

Thanks for the clarification.

Re: Tires and Rims Question

To get our E-rated Cooper STTs, 3860 lb tires, we had to change wheel size, up to 18in.

18 inches of wheel with a 35 inch tire still gives us 17 inches of sidewall also.

Re: Tires and Rims Question

The stock Ford wheels are 16". When I switched from 245/75/16 tires (stock Hancooks) to 285/75/16 Nitto Terragrapplers, I changed to a new 16" wheel as well. This was because the width of the stock Ford wheel was 7" (I believe) while the new one was 8" which better accomodates the larger tire. If remember correctly, the minimum wheel width for the new tire was supposed to be 7.5". However, I believe Geoffff installed larger tires on the stock Ford wheels.

Re: Tires and Rims Question

The new 08's need to run atleast 17" rims due to the brake upgrade IF YOU ARE OPTING FOR A 4X4. However, for the non SMB 4X4, the stock 16" rims offer more tire sizes and combination than 17's or 18" rims. Hope this helps.

No, I waver once in a while on tire size, but so far I've stayed with the stock Ford wheels and the original tires (BFG AT TA KO LT285/75R-16 D1). They do look a little small on the lifted van, but they seem to perform just fine.

Geoffff - 285/175/16 is not the stock tire for the Ford E350. The stock tire is a 245/75/16 Hancook E load rating.

Sorry, you're right, I wasn't clear. I meant the tires originally supplied by Sportsmobile with their 4x4 conversion (on the stock Ford rims).
