Sounds like a good compromise... I think you were smart to leave the rusty bolts alone at least for now...

If you think the exhaust manifold heat will damage the rubber tube, you can make a simple heat shield from an old soda can. A piece of metal between the two will reflect most of the heat. Just keep it an inch away from the rubber and it should be fine.

I also have some "firesleeve" (racing stuff) but the ID was a little tight so didn't use it. It is good stuff though.

I think it should be fine, it is maybe 3" away, there are other hoses close by too. I'll check it after the next trip and see how it is doing.
