I picked up my van this morning and running fine again. Problem was chafed wire from cam sensor to PCM. Found the short where the wiring harness was rubbing on the side of the valve cover. Also found leaking cam sensor o-ring which was replaced.

Guess there are plenty of places for this to happen under the hood:

I sure hope hope this is the end of the problems for a while. My wife keeps asking if I will print up a list of all Ford dealerships on our route to Alaska this summer. Guess I should. Perhaps I should flat tow a tow truck!

Glad to hear you have a solution...

I would also suspect that this was related to the recent service

Hopefully you don't need any help on the road. If you do, we found the St. George, BC Ford dealer to be very impressive.

Wire harness

A friend of mine is a diesel mechanic at a Ford dealership.

He wants me to change the wiring harness at 25000 miles. He has seen alot of harness problems..

He also changed out the HPOP for some preventive maintenance.. before it went out.

If anyones van fails to start when it's hot (even once) get the HPOP replaced...

That is not a bad idea. In 2000, we drove to Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories for a wilderness canoe trip in our Subaru Forester. It had a problem with the engine warning light coming on at odd intervals, so I stopped in Missoula at the start of the trip at the Sub dealership.

They couldn't find anything wrong, but the mechanic said just take to the nearest dealership if it gives you real trouble. The nearest dealership to Fort Simpson was in Edmonton, Alberta, 1,500 miles south.

Luckily, we didn't need their services, but we did take a rock on the windshield on the start of the Liard River Highway, and had to drive nearly 3,000 miles with the windshield duck-taped together!

Map of Ford dealerships where you are going = GOOD.

My van is at 24,000+ miles so your friend may be on to something!

I need a friend who is a Ford diesel mechanic. Every Ford PSD owner should have one (or be one)!

Phil that was the same problem I had with my work truck. I had Heber (SMB) show me where the dang cam sensor was last week. I had the guys at work show me where they were on the trucks but the sensors on the vans are hard to see to much less get to. I still plan to carry one though. Hope it is the end of your trouble. I always get a bad feeling while off roading by myself. I do carry a sat phone and once had to call for a tow. But in the back country? Hope it never happens! I plan to get a pull pal as a little insurance. You can never have too many tools or friends that can get you out.
