Re: Feel free to comment/ help me determine my new SMB build

I love the propane heater we have. Waking up warm is such a wonderful part of the van.

I would ditch the microwave, but then, we don't use ours much at home, either.

2 Kyocera panels would be...

Re: 110V hot water heater - looking for feedback.

Our van has one. I would not order it again-- I'd rather have the space. As Langton says, it's easy enough to heat up water on the stove.

Re: Adventuring with Kids

Hi Geoff,

We have two little girls, 3 and 6. Camping with them is so fun, but also so much more work than our normal lives at home.

I don't think you need to make a crib in the van. The bed in...

Re: Satellite phones

I am also a big fan of Iridium. It doesn't have the huge delay that makes talking awkward, like the Inmarsat or other geostationary satellite phones.

Does anyone know if they're going to launch...

Re: Burning Man??

Hi,
I'm going. This is my first time, but I have wanted to go for a long time, so I am pretty excited. We'll be in Kidsville at 4:30 & D (I think), camped near the center.

Matt.

Re: Kyocera panels - length of KC130 vs KD135

I've never used the futuristic 3M tape-- you aren't concerned that it will pull the paint off? Or is the paint strong enough to hold the panels on?

Re: Kyocera panels - length of KC130 vs KD135

Yes, that's the same connector SMB Texas used when they prewired our van for solar.

Re: Kyocera panels - length of KC130 vs KD135

Hi,
I just ordered two of the KC130's... Would you mind posting pictures of your installation? I have not yet figured out how to mount them to the pop top.

Thanks.

Matt.

Re: Pulling Overhead Console

I just stumbled across these touch screen circuit breakers. They are marketed to boats and RV's, and so might be cheaper than the aviation ones...

Re: NATO surplus fuel cans

Just curious, did they send your three tanks by commercial freight with a lift gate, or something more sensible? :)

Sorry, I edited my message above to make the steps more clear (and remove some talk fuel cans that Greg already covered better). Their website has a 'session ID' in the URL which wrecks a direct link...

Re: NATO surplus fuel cans

Hi Guys,

I don't know if this is helpful, but I found a great deal on the NATO plastic water cans. $17/each, with free shipping on orders over $50. I feel a little bad about their free shipping,...

Re: Danhard A/C

Greg,
I suspect that running the Danhard instead of the factory AC does not improve fuel economy. The Danhard is still drawing power from your alternator to run. You may just be moving the load...

Re: Danhard A/C

Hi,
Here are photos of the 12 volt AC. The folks in Austin installed it when they built the van for us. It did not come with the blank van from Ford. I think Paul told me this is a factory option in...

Re: Danhard A/C

I also thought about the Danhard, but I only wanted something that cools the back seat down for the kids while we are driving. So we ordered the unlisted '12 Volt Rear AC', which was less than half...

Re: Flush mounted stove? Experiences?

Hi,
I ordered my van with a flush mounted stove. So I have not experienced the other kind.

I am happy with it, it works well. It hasn't rattled yet, though my van is not 4x4 so there really...

It's good to hear that the top has been sturdy in a whole lot of wind. This will make camping there a lot easier.

Poptop at windy Burning Man

Hi All,
How much wind can the pop top's handle? We are going to the Black Rock Desert this year in late August, where I've read it often blows twenty or thirty mph during the day. This would damage...

We just drove our V8 5.4l E250 from Austin to San Diego, ~1300 miles, and averaged a little over 14 mpg, doing 70mph the whole time.
