I have a 2004 smb w/v10 and live in CA. I have the 5 star tuner. Ever since I got the tuner I have had it set to the 87 oct. performance tune. I have had it smoged twice with that tune and passed.
Have you tried smoging yet?

You can always ask the shop to check it without putting the vin number in, that way if it does fail, it doesn't flag next time.
Some smog places intentionally fail you, because then they(or some other shop) can make even mo money

I have a 2005 E350 v-10 as well as the 5star tuner. I havent used the tuner since i flashed the tune like 3 or 4 years ago. If i recall it had an option to backup the factory tune before programming the new tune. If memory serves me correctly 5 star emailed me a tune which was then loaded into the tuner via usb on my laptop. Isnt it possible for someone to backup a stock tune, save it to desktop on their computer and then email it to you?

Maybe im confusing tuners...??

I have a 5star on my 5.4 V8.
Twice I've had problem with smogging in CA.

- Two years ago I forgot to switch back to the stock tune and FAILED the smog check. Switched back to the stock tune and passed.

- This year I remembered to go back to the stock tune but didn't wait to drive it around for a few days. FAILED, some of the sensors didn't reset/clear because I didn't have enough miles and drive cycles on the van after the switch. 50 miles and two weeks later I passed.

This thread is making me paranoid about losing the stock tune.

With my tuner, it reads the vehicle DIN and locks the tune to that vehicle. So trying to load the saved stock settings to another vehicle will fail.

As with Youngster above, when it was time to smog I de-tuned and then went in for the check. Failed because the system hadn't collected enough data from the sensors. Argh. I was told 100 miles of driving before the retest (luckily free).
