Is the tire carrier supported at the door, or is it just supported at the hub? I'd love to see a photo of the tire carrier side if you have one.

The handle that you see in the center of the wheel turns an L shaped rod that latches to a bar on the door. It looked like it would be really solid.

Another nice feature!!

I decided if my spindle setup was not rigid enough I would have little issue mounting a bracket up high on the door. Seeing as how I cut out the spare tire carrier, any setup will be a permanent part of the van.

Here's my steel frame, spindles, and arms if anyone is interested:

I like it Flux, looks sturdy.I like yours where you've captured the top and bottom of the spindle for strength. I welded a piece of angle the length of the spindle under my bumper, tying it to the bumper face.

It had slight flex so I added these Delrin shims on the bumper so the arms are firmly seated on them when the arms are locked closed. It made them very sturdy without any additional latches or brackets. In this picture you can also see I added a rivnut with a screw in rubber bumper to the end of the swing arm so the van door wouldn't get banged up if I opened it into the arm. The arms Pop Pin is situated so the arm is held just past the detent on the van door holder.

Thanks ShadeTree! I definitely want the arms to slide up on to some hard plastic pad to keep them fully seated in the center when closed. Detents on pop pin and stops are critical for sure.

These spindle pivots seem very burly, but we shall see once they are loaded up and bounced around a bit how they react.

I share your concern. This past weekend we loaded up and went camping at Morro Bay. About 600 miles round trip with the exploring we did. Lady Shadetree used the lower box as her bar, so it was loaded with adult drinks, kids drinks, gallons of water, etc. The upper box had tools and camp gear in it. I kept a close eye through the rear windows on movement, and I had another couple of vans with me watching as well. No discernible movement to be seen. So far so good. Time will tell though.

Man, defiantly the best use of a stock rear bumper I have seen, it looks great. I too really love the look and the lines of the front bumper on this. When I eventually get a front I will probably want a winch though but I do love the styling of this, looks great.
