Grounding a Portable Generator?

Hi all,

When charging the house battery and running the fridge on an SMB with a small portable inverter generator (2000w surge/1600w running), is it necessary to ground, or, is the circuit fine without? There seems to be a lot of conflicting info out there! Thank you!

Not necessary, since portable generators are inherently safe because they have no ground loop. The ground post is for connecting to a building circuit, and is necessary to allow building circuit breakers to function.

Also - GFCIs won't work on inverter generators because they have a floating neutral, unless you buy the newer Honda Industrial series. But again, it's low risk because you could only get shocked if you complete a full circuit to neutral. Touching the ground (or van or anything else) won't shock you unless neutral is bonded to structure, or you also happen to have a damaged neutral wire somewhere making contact.
