Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
Bill and others, here's one on-line offer at a pretty good price.
http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/it ... nder/16069
They call the tank a "5-pound" while some others say "4-pound" or "4.7 pound." These little guys cost more than their big brothers because there's not so much demand for them. We love ours. We usually carry a green bottle as backup in case the little tank goes empty. Got the regular-to-Coleman adapter hose at the local camping-fishing-hunting-Carhardt-crafting-snackbar-pharmacy. Living in a small town is great!

Refilling one of these costs way less than buying new "green bottles," but the intitial cost is kinda high.

How is the adaptation done? Standard parts?

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
Yep, standard stuff. You can get various adapters from several sources. Depends on whether your camping appliance has the green bottle screw right into it or has a hose. If it works. the hundred-yard-long URL below shows one of the cheaper alternatives from Cabela's.

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
Great. Now I just need to figure out a safe place to carry a 5-lb. propane tank -- probably secured in a box on a hitch-haul rack. Any reason that it couldn't ride on its side, strapped in place?

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
I carry (two) one gallons tanks. But they also make 2.5 gallon tanks that look like a typical BBQ 5 gallon tank cut in half. Those are the same diameter as a standard BBQ tank only much shorter. They offer a much more stable platform compared to my little 1 gal tanks.

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
Am I correct in assuming the coleman can only be run off a tank and not off the same gas connect I would hook up a Olympian heater to? Thanks for any info. RD

Google propane bottle adaptors. I carry different tee adaptors and hoses to run a variety of items at once.

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
daveb: I know I can hook it up. But is the gas pressure to run it the same as we get for a furnace? Thanks

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
Not sure what you're asking. In general, air temperature and flow changes the pressure. Are you asking if a smaller tank will run a large propane furnace? For the most part, the smaller the tank, the more it is affected by cold air temps. I've had to warm up my one gallon tank because it was low on propane. Just too cold outside to boil off the propane to make things work well because of "low pressure". Don here came up with a solution:

Re: Coleman cooktop / grill / crock pot
I don't know the details of the heater you are talking about, but in general the regulator for RV appliances is low pressure while units like the Coleman Stove have a built in high pressure regulator. So if you want to use the RV propane tank you need to tee into it prior to the regulator.
