Star Cool A/C Questions
Is the Star Cool A/C unit something I can install myself if I buy a used SMB without one? How much do they run?
It looks like from the SMB site I'd need an invertor too for the starcool... is that... uh, do they just plug in to the invertor?
What are the alternatives for A/C beyond the dash?

Found out today from SMB that the Starcool can be installed aftermarket, but it's such an involved process that they won't do it. To me that at least sounds prohibitivly expensive. Since I'm going sans generator and don't tend to camp where there are hookups, I think the whole starcool thing isn't going to work.
SMB also mentioned that the starcool only would go down to 20° less than the outside temp- so if it's 100° here in Tucson the inside of the van would be 80°... and since it's more likely to be 110°... ops:  (Getting hot in here)

starcool
You might want to look what truckers are using. I have Starcool and it will get the inside of the van super cold fast while driving, but not when plugged into shore power...too bad but better than nothing. If its 90 out the van will get to115 inside. With the starcool 70s are nicer to get in to plus the refer dosent run so much. I bought it for keeping the van cool while driving and taking off the edge before I leave out.

Starcool
I've e-mailed SMB in Texas about a used van they're offering that doesn't have Starcool. I asked if it could be added and here's what they quoted to me:
To add Starcool:
Starcool A/C - $2,482
Cabinet modifcation - $256
12Volt AC only $1205 with the same cost for cabinet modification.
So it would seem that they are willing to add it to a used SMB.

I guess I should clarify my conversation was with SMB West and the answer was "It can be done but it's so intensive we won't pull someone off the line to do it."
So I think we're learning (like the 10g max water tank in an EB from SMB Indiana http://sportsmobileforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=55 ) that each SMB location has slightly different answers. I wonder if it's location or if it's who you talk to at that location.

If you saw how busy the crew in Fresno is, you'd understand why management doesn't want to put effort into too many retro's when they have so many new orders to fill.

My experience is that it's a little bit of both. Many options were 'impossible' until I asked to work with the 'head engineer' at SMB west instead of posing query after query trhough my sales agent.

Will the front A/C keep the back of an EB 350 comfortable for passengers in hot (78+) weather? Or should we be considering the Starcool for road trips? We won't be using it in many campgrounds, etc, while camped but we will be doing a fair number of cross country/long trips. I'd think the monkey worth it to keep my 3 and 5 year olds from having literal meltdowns.

I have found it a very welcome option in my 2004 EB350 design, the low setting in the back will really help in cooling of the van. I do have a dark blue van, so that doesn’t help the situation out. I have been cross country twice, and to CA once. I even found it welcomed in some campgrounds on the east coast. A TV with a DVD player really helps keeping the kids happy on the long hauls ( 8 and 11), but that would be another topic.
OH, make sure the TV has Headphones if you want to keep your sanity.
Have Fun

New Starcool version?
Has anyone been involved in the beta-testing of the new Starcool?
Does anyone have details on the new version?
On Friday I saw a band new build of a 2007 Ford SMB at SMB Austin. It was sitting in the 90+ degree heat, the van engine was off, but the Starcool was running strong. THere was a Honda 2000 generator running behind the van providing power for the Starcool. It was very nice and comfortable in the SMB.
I understand that running the Starcool on a small generator used to be a problem. Maybe that is solved?
I also understand that the new Starcool will now run for some period of time from batteries and inverter.
Our SMB is on order, and I understand we are supposed to be getting the newversion of Starcool.
Who has the sccoop?
Thanks,
Greg in Austin
