IMO, retirement is a journey, not a destination. Life is too short and unpredictable to say "I'm going to work really hard, retire early and
then start enjoying life".
Recently, someone I knew from work was lost to pancreatic cancer within about 9 months of diagnosis. A great guy, previously healthy, in good shape, mid-40's.
Not sure if that's the philosophical conundrum you were exploring, but that's my take on life.
