4.10's or 4.56's with V8?
About how many miles did you have on your Ford LS?

Glad you like them. Knew you would. You can always go to the next size up in tires if you want to cruise faster.

Re: 4.10's or 4.56's with V8?
I have 4.56s and 265 tires, which are ~31.6".
I have the V10, and running at speed is not an issue. 75 is a comfortable towing speed, and when empty dessert roads allow it, triple digits are no problem (not towing) when I have the AT tires on.

The van is much better on the hills for sure. Going up to the Eisenhower tunnel from Denver we pulled the whole grade, without issue, at the posted speed limit. Vail pass was still a little steep for the 5.4, but we kept up with traffic for the most part. On the interstate I've lost the ability to cruise at 75 comfortably, although short bursts up to 75 and higher are doable, 60-65 seems to be where the van likes to cruise now in OD. Around town and on the "B" roads is where the new ratio really shines. Good passing and merging power and a whole lot snapier off the line. Haven't had the van off road yet but I did drive a little in low range and this thing really creeps along nicely. Can't wait to tackle some jeep trails around the neighborhood this weekend.
All in all I'm glad I went with the 4.56s over the 4.10s, although, I think the the 4.56s are probably better suited for a 35" tire. If your running 33" tires and can put up with the lack of high speed interstate cruising and are thinking of going to 35" tires in the future, then go w/ the 4.56s. If your happy w/ your 33s, then go with 4.10s.
On a side note, when they got the rear diff apart they found the remnances of a ford lsd in there. It was not working and the clutches were eating into the carrier. They fixed it all up and now Ive got both rear tires getting power. Ye haw!
Thanks again for the input...Luke

I heard you might need to get a new carrier if you go to 4.56... Did you have to get one?
Not necessary if you go 4.10.

Re: 4.10's or 4.56's with V8?
I did get a new carrier for the rear, but the shop put a "thick gear set" in the front so that carrier stayed. I don't know much about the why's or what's on the subject. Maybe somone w/ more experience could enlighten us on the details. ... I have been told there is no carrier swap for 4.10s in any dana 60.

Re: 4.10's or 4.56's with V8?
As you add teeth to the ring gear, it gets larger in diameter. After a certain point, some carriers are too small & either need to be ground for them to fit---but you can't grind them that much before they become too thin, so a new carrier is sometimes nesessary. It is usually the case with anything bigger than 4.56's (higher numerically). I am no expert either, but that is the way I understand it. If thats not correct, I am sure someone will correct me.

Re: 4.10's or 4.56's with V8?
Some axles can have three different carriers depending on the ratios used.
Dana 60 fronts use two
4.56<Higher
4.30>Lower
The 10.5 Sterling Rear just uses one carrier for all Ratios, and the same carrier in Semi and Full Floating rears.

Here's my two cents: I did 4:30s with 33s (snow tires). Runs just fine like that. I live at 7000 feet and drive between 7000 and 10,500 feet weekly and I think the power is just fine. I will be going to 35s once snow season is done with.
