Saudi 4x4 van

I was at SMB a while back and saw a rig going to Saudi Arabia. Pretty cool! Designed to sleep 6 this van was made for extended stays in the desert. It’s a Voyager top EB with an on board generator to run the air conditioner. It had a fully enclosed shower/head and had four captain chairs plus a twin gaucho's. They used the driver cab bed for children but also had an overhead bed as well as the gaucho that made into a full bed. The rack on top was used to stow equipment. It seemed to have a great layout for those with kids.

Re: Saudi 4x4 van

Was that a diesel van? I see they have a Cummins/Onan generator. Very, very nice.

Re: Saudi 4x4 van

You know, I never asked. Forgot the diesels are hard to find anymore and assumed it was.

Re: Saudi 4x4 van

We were checking it out a while back, and I do believe it is a gasser. I remember making some smartass comment about how cheap gas was for them..

Re: Saudi 4x4 van

I picked up my van the day before they were shipping this puppy out. I got to tour around in it a little bit. The thing has everything, and the pictures don't do the wood work justice, the interior was very impressive.

Re: Saudi 4x4 van

If I were taking this to Mexico, Columbia, Russia, Somolia or almost any country within 1000 miles of Saudia Arabia I would want the vehicle that has some kind of protection. I understand that there are limits but does SMB install kevlar laminate panels around the living quarters, run flats and bullet proof glass?

Unlikely that SMB has this expertise, or at least I've never heard of them doing this.

Armored vehicles with the features you mention are a very big business in Latin America, Asia, central Europe and the FSU. It is a highly specialized and somewhat technical process. Some of my friends who live in these countries have armored vehicles for personal use.

A professionally done armored vehicle will cost about 1.5x to 2.5x the original cost of the new vehicle, depending on the options chosen. The armoring process also adds substantially to the vehicle's weight. That alone would be a major complication with an SMB.
