Smoking Brakes on a Sportsmobile?

Every owners manual of every automatic transmission equipped vehicle I have ever owned has recommended the same thing:

"Shift the transmission into a lower gear when descending a steep grade."

Jack's right - The documentation with my Quigley conversion clearly says - in bold letters - Don't Do It.

Well, not in those exact words but the reasons given are exactly what Jack said - It'll overstress the rear end.

Keep in mind that when and if you decide to upgrade anything other that pads, you might run into compatibility issues, it might not be just a simple swap. For example, on my 03 quigley, I am looking to upgrade my front rotors to cryo power slots (w/hawk pads) as I find the stocks fairly weak, I have to modify the studs on any new rotor I get to fit my bolt pattern. My front end is from an 03 F-350, in stock form is 8X170, the vans rear is 8X6.5, so Quigley modified the studs on the front rotors to match the rears 8X6.5. P.I.T.A. One more check next to the box that says "dynatrack front axle swap"

Guess that's one more advantage to the SMB conversion. I use my rig in low range 2wd fairly often on paved grades within reason to keep speeds in check. On very steep terrain where the rear axle slips you'd be foolish to attempt pushing a heavy van in 2wd up a loose based road or trail. Maybe that's the true reason Quigley states this...people not knowing when it can be damageing to the vehicles drive train. Then again maybe there is something different in the design.

On my 2WD van (lower weight) this was a hot (err cool) setup with the Hawk LTS pads. Not sure if worth going for the more aggressive Hawk pads given SMB gross weight....?
