This manufactured shortage astounds me too--WTH? Of all things we'd hoard in a minor crisis TP is it?

I do get a bit of a chuckle at the current panic over TP---in a way I've been a long, long time ahead of such things. I HATE going to any store for household and personal care supplies: shampoo, soap, razors, etc etc so when I do go typically I buy enough to last at least a year. Mind you I'm smack dab in the middle of a city mostly surrounded by retail outfits out the wazoo--travel in any direction and you'll come across so many its mind boggling.

So when this TP "panic" hit I've stocked up since late last year---good for the duration of this current thing.

And yes by all means be safe and mind most of what the CDC is advising as safer behavior these days. I hope everyone here fares well until we're past this.

Let's start with just-in-time inventory. No one on the supply chain carries inventory. The retailers' inventories are on the shelves. The distributors' inventories are in the trucks. The manufacturers' inventories are in the processing plant. Add to that, in some cases, where the raw materials or the products come from. If they're across an ocean or in another COVID-19 country, they may take a while to get here.

In the case of food, Americans eat out more than they eat at home. That means the food supply industry has to retool itself to smaller packages and tighter restrictions to get product to the shelves.

The initial hoarders emptied the shelves. Just-in-time inventory meant there wasn't anything in storage and the factories were geared to produce new product on the pre-hoarding schedule. Everyone else noticed the empty shelves and immediately bought out the replacements when they finally arrived, leading to newly empty shelves.

Since we've now trained the population to hoard when the next crisis comes. I doubt business is going to abandon just-in-time inventory, so we'll see this situation again.

Excellent supply chain summary above. It applies to much more than food.

Keeping with the theme of this thread... There are some creative & hilarious song parodies related to COVID-19 on YouTube. Here's just a couple that cracked me up:

How about some COVID-19 Pick-up Lines...

Is it hot in here or is it just our fevers and shortness of breath?

"When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start in 12 months. Maybe 18."

Baby, do you need toilet paper? Because I can be your Prince Charmin.

Is heaven your quarantine zone? Because I think you are an Angel.

If the coronavirus does not take you out, can I?

You Smell So Good, Is That Purell You’re Wearing?

Cough here often?

You can’t spell virus without U and I.

I saw you from across the bar. Stay there.

Hey Babe! Can I ship you a drink?

One-ply? Two-ply? Neither. The only thing I’m looking for is your re-ply.

Is that hand sanitizer in your pocket, or are you just happy to be within 6 feet of me?

Since all the public libraries are closed, I’m checking you out instead.

Can’t spell quarantine without u r a q t 😉

“We’re quarantined in the same house, your options are kind of limited.”
