When I worked on the irrigation crew at a country club in southeast Idaho back in the early 80's, I used one of these torches to "burn ditch."
Beginning of the season we hooked one of these torches to a big propane tank, then torched the irrigation canals to clear them of weeds for the watering season. It was one of the most coveted tasks on the whole ground crew, often resulting in brush fires that extended well beyond the ditch.
The vehicle that carried the propane tank was a 67 dodge pickup with a rag stuffed in the gas tank instead of a cap (and this was of course half the time on the ditch side of the vehicle!)
I always wondered why people didn't use these in winter to clear their driveways.
