video of telescope crashing

A buddy of mine won a trip to this telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico a couple years back. He walked across the catwalk to the center objective. Bet he's a bit freaked out. Not sure if it was scheduled for demo but read that they said they knew it had some issues.

Who knew that the GoldenEye movie was a predictor of the future.

I heard a news story on this this week. Kind of surprising that someone didn't fund keeping that thing up. Certainly more expensive now! But alas, I know nothing of these matters.

What happens when you don't maintain your rigging.

Seems the foundations of the supporting structures was greatly compromised, reinforcing them massively cost-prohibitive so it was left to die peacefully I guess.

Sad to see it go but even the pyramids and the Sphinx won't last forever either..........

It was damaged by a series of tropical storms and hurricanes over the last few years. It was going to be decommissioned but not quite so dramatically.
