Anza-Barrego Desert State Park

I'm headed down next week and would like some "local knowledge" on a good spot for a base camp in an unimproved camp area. I'll "jeep out" from there on day trips.

Not Sure which part of the Park you want to camp at but we usually Camp in the Anza Borrego/Ocotillo Side. Alot more open spaces to camp..

If you find the Blu Inn off the 78, you'll see a Cell Tower (only one with Data) next to it.., we've been exploring all areas (away from the crowds and RVs), hard to get to (must use 4x4), and secluded and have a line of sight to the tower. You can get cell/data EVDO RevA service camped at some pretty cool spots. I'd googleearth that whole area and check it out. That Sat phone from Globalst*r sucks by the way. Not good old reliable when you need to reach someone in a hurry when your out campin in the boonies.

Here is a googlemap link, you'll see the road heading north next to the tower which connects to various other trails. Gas Domes, Commune, Wolf, Shell Reef, Bank Wash, Shell Reef, Pumpkin Patch area, etc..

I go there often. I also seek remote camp areas. Last visit, I camped at Font's Point, a short sandy dirt road drive off the main northern paved road in the park. You might find another camper or two there, or maybe none. The sunrise there is magnificent. The views down into the badlands are amazing.

Another choice is Coyote Canyon, in the northwest part of the park. Some good 4by wheelin' there, too. Also check out Sand Canyon, down off the southern road. Drive in by Split Mountain, and keep going. A park map and topo will help.
