Camping: Area 51-ish with arctictraveller

arctictraveller stopped by Las Vegas for a visit last week. Just so happens the Red Flag air combat training exercises were happening, so we decided to get out of Las Vegas. We headed up north to a mountain range overlooking the off limits mountain range that overlooks Area 51.

We saw some really cool high altitude dog fights and got to go to sleep to the sound of night exercises that ran well past midnight. A good time was had by all.

Very fun just to say you’ve been there. I did that with my sister back in 2015, only didn’t stay overnight (disappointing in that we didn’t see anything either). Still feel like we have drones overhead monitoring us.

Beautiful high desert landscape, that even good 2d pictures can't do justice to.

Watching jet jockeys from the best air force on the planet 'do their thing' is always a lot of fun!

Thanks for sharing :-)

Hancock Summit area, just west of Crystal Springs and Hiko. Know it well.

Strange things happen along the Extraterrestrial Highway...there's times my XM radio will just go dead for a period of time...

gcvt,
Question: how does one find out when "RED FLAG" air combat training with take place?
I'm looking to experience it at Father Crowley Vista CA-190.

To be honest, I'm not really sure. I've only lived here for two years and, as far as I know, there was no Red Flag in 2020 or 2021 due to the pandemic. This year it was all over the local news and everyone in town was talking about it.

They are supposed to hold it three times per year but I haven't seen any announcements about #2 dates this year.

Best bet may be to just check https://www.nellis.af.mil/ every now and then and see if they have any info posted.
