Florida camping? Who knew!
Just getting around to posting our latest trip...southeast this time....we don't usually head that way b/c of the volume of people!!...but February in Iowa is a great excuse for trying something new. We started off from IA and headed SE through St Loius, through Alabama, to our first two nights near Panama City. We stayed at St. Andrews St. Park. Not used to being right next to another camper, but, we came to find that was pretty standard in the FLA campgrounds we went to. There is some palm trees in-between, but not like boondocking out west! Great shrimp and oysters, showers at the campground, and electricity!?! First time we got to plug in...we used everything! Micro, lights, TV/DVR, water heater, man, THAT was great!...After two nights headed to the Atlantic coast to Little Talbot Island St. Park...(Ps ferry was out, had to go the long way) that campground sat across the Street from the beach access, and was a dirty little campground...couldn't wait to move down the road! The beach was OK< best part was seeing the big carriers being built a few miles away. We didn't have a reservation for a second night (which was OK, but a Walmart night wasn't too exciting either) The Ranger told us to go to the County Park in town and we/people could stay ONE night hassle free...we drove there and in between some luxury condos was a nice little beach park (Peter's Point), PLUS, you could drive on the beach with permit...stayed our one night and headed S toward Canaveral Natl. Pk. Campsites were full, but we managed to score the "emergency" spot at Gamble Rodgers, right on the beach. Cool spot, tight but, showers and ELECTRICITY!!! Just a quick walk north on beach and we scored some great peel n eat shrimp at a local restaurant! Only one night avail there so headed about 15 miles S to Tomoka St. Pk. road our bikes and enjoyed the park! Went in town to the local fish mkt. and grilled fresh fish on the BBQ. We constantly used the Florida St. Pk web site to check on availability at various campgrounds we wanted to see/be...was a few days before Bike Week in Daytona, so the Harleys were becoming a steady noise at campground and HWY's all around...so time to head back East....checking website (again) lead to our favorite spot; St. George Island St. Park. A small campground, but out at the end of an island in the Gulf...very private. Great beach walks and biking...since they lock the gates at sundown, we road our bikes at night enjoying the freedom and sea air! Rangers always asked us (at check-in) how we found/reserved the site. When we told them we reserved the St. George spot only two days prior, they were impressed...they said they constantly tell people to check the site for such scores, but folks rarely do...so CHECK THE WEBSITEt if you go! Anyway, had a blast and think it could be an every few year trip... ALWAYS end of Feb/Beg of March! Before the Spring Breakers, Bike Week, and after the Daytona 500 traffic! Here are some pics!
