Re: Grand Canyon North Rim Camping Suggestions
Tuweep (Toroweep) is a great place to camp and spend a few days. We drove my girlfriends 2000 Ford Focus out there 2 summers back and she ended up getting pretty pissed at me for talking her into taking her car.
Depending on which way you come in you will probably drive through St. George or Kanab. Stop by the BLM office in either one of these cities and pick up the extremely helpful Arizona Strip topo. Also the National Geographic North Rim Trails Illustrated is a good map as well, I have both. You can camp for free in the Kaibab National Forest on the North Rim. I have stayed at Timp Point, Parasawawampits, and Locust point. All three are superb and have stellar views. There is a great bike trail out there called the Rainbow Rim Trail. It doesn't get much better than this for single track bike trails, if you're into that.
In the past I have taken Forest Service Rd 22 south of Fredonia to get to the Kaibab. And I believe FS Rd 5 to get to Toroweep (I think but don't quote me on that). I know it is the road near the Polygamist towns of Colorado City/Hilldale, off of Hwy 389. Which by the way!!!
If you go through Colorado City turn off on state line road and drive a mile or so to the dairy. Those Polygamists make some damn fine cheese, seriously. It's arguably better than Amish cheese, but that's another topic for another post.
Anyway, there is so much to explore in the Kaibab, Arizona Strip, Grand Canyon area.
