Great discussion. My primary thought about a lift would be to raise the body off of the frame for engine work. How high does the body have raise up to clear the engine etc?
My van has a CCV high pop top and comes in at about nine feet. Luckily my new shop has a 20' ceiling so I have the room if the lift can go that high.

I think you just need 3-4' to lift a body off a van, just have to clear the top of the engine. However if you mean lift it off and then have room to work on the chassis below it (without rolling chassis clear of lift) then you may need a lot more space.

Wirehead, beyond that, if you want to stand under your van to change oils, etc, consider the heights you might need. If I'm going to pay xxxx amount for a lift I'm putting the van on there to vacuum it lol. Be sure your lift fills all your needs, not just raising the body.

Agreed, my personal lift was limited by building roof height which was limited by city code. If spending the money and you don't have any issues like this by all means do it right the first time.

I helped Agile install their first two post lift in the old shop but I don’t remember the brand or rating. It lifted a 10,000lb SMB but once up it was a bit scary. It seemed to flex or move around while working on the van and the last time I saw it there were four stands underneath just incase. I would recommend buying the heaviest rated highest quality you can afford.

These guys often have auctions with lifts. There’s one coming up, a Jag shop, but the lifts are lighter weight. Worth keeping an eye on.

I had forgotten I already posted that Roller auction site, but here’s Ritchie Bros. auctions I’ve been browsing…..there’s several 10K lb lifts lifts in an upcoming auction March 2 at their Longmont location
