Adding a 3rd seat
I am looking at a Sportsmobile that only has the driver and passenger seats. I need a third captain seat for my son. Is there a way to add the third seat if Sportsmobile did not include it? They say due to the raised floor it would be hard to add.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
Yes, it's been done. I don't know any details.
The search function on this site sucks.
I suggest you use google. Something like this
"install captain chair site:sportsmobileforum.com"
Whatever you want to find here, just use google with site:sportsmobileforum.com.

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
I have a thread somewhere here about adding one to my SMB. Wasn't too hard (well, I paid to have it done, but the guy said it wasn't that hard! :-)

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
Mounting a seat just about anywhere you want one in a van isn't hard at all. It's pretty basic actually, but working out the seat belts may be another story. If you're mounting in an OEM location, even if seats didn't come in your van, the seat belt mounts will probably be behind the upper trim, you'll just have to modify that. I'm speaking of the mounts for the shoulder belt, by the way. Both sides of the lap belt are either mounted on the seat or mounted to the floor............usually.

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
I have one extra captain chair with rotating base that I took out of my van, might sell it if you are local and can pick up at SoCal. PM me if interested

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
We have a removable 3rd Captain's chair for our grandson. If yo come by I can show you how easy it would be to mount one.
If your location was listed I would know if this was feasible.

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
Thanks for all the responses! This allows me to consider more vans in my search.
I appreciate the offer to stop by and check out your van, however I am a bit of a drive away... in Georgia.

Re: Adding a 3rd seat
If your son is still in a carseat, the seat belt situation is easier. All you need is an old fashioned (non-retracting) lap belt (for now). My brother and I added a third seat to my van for my daughter. By removing the exhaust heat shields, you have easy access to the bottom of the floor. Located the structural ribs and anchor to those. Better yet, locate the mounts for the factory seats and use those. You can do it at home in a few hours or have a shop do it.

Does anyone have recommendations for shops in the Southern California area that might be able to help with an install like this? We’re in the same boat, looking to install a third captain chair for car seat for new addition to the family. I’ve also seen a few more modern captains chairs for sale (newer E series) that have the seatbelts integrated into the chair, which seemed ideal. Any experience with these! Thanks!
