Re: Bungee on penthouse top

My local ACE Hardware carries it.

Personally I have never been impressed with using the bungees only to lover the top. I supplement the bungees by keeping our van sealed tight and have the Fantastic Vent exhaust fan on high. Really sucks the sides in. Also reduces the force needed to lower the top.

Most hardware stores or army surplus stores carry rolls of bulk bungy cord

Amazon or Ebay for me. I've ordered it 2-3 times now. If anyone needs the length I can dig it up, but it's pretty easy to just remove one and measure it.

I also like that I have enough left over to make all the bungee cords I'll ever need in this life.

I would assume that any bungee for the penthouse would need to be UV resistant. I've had some regular bungees that haven't held up too well in sunlight applications.

Sportsmobile's bungee doesn't hold up well either. I think they just use the regular stuff. The original bungee on my 95 was crispy and withering away. I just went with the marine stuff on Ebay IIRC, in black to match better.

I'd imagine marine bungee cord would be UV resistant. Not so sure about stuff from Harbor Freight and the like. I've used HF rope for painter lines on my canoes, and it definitely is NOT UV stable. I store the boats outside and basically have to replace it every year or two.

Oh no, I agree. It would be a NO for me on Harbor Freight bungee. I didn't even know they had it but there are just some things that are yes and some that are no at Harbor Freight. Almost everything they sell anymore is becoming a no since nothing from there lasts. I've only had good luck with small power tools from there.

Never buy a big tool like an air compressor from them. I did recently. It lasted 60 days. I was lazy taking it back and was within a day or two of the craptastic 90 day warranty. 90 days on a big shop compressor! They know it's crap too, obviously.

I just measured the length that the cords run on a 1992 Ford EB van. It looks like it needs to cover about 4ft front + 4ft back + 11ft side + 11ft side which is about 40 feet for each bungee/stretch cord. I'm not sure how much stretch you'd put into them, maybe 20%? That would mean you need about 32ft for each cord. It looks like my original cords (if they're original) are 3/8" thick.

Anyone who's done this remember the length they ended up using?

Thinking of ordering this marine grade 75ft long 3/8" thick stretch cord:
