Lost a D-shackle yesterday... Miraculously found the bolt and the shackle while hiking the road... Parts were about 1/4 mile apart. Washboards and cattle guards can shake the bolt loose, apparently. So, I attached a zip-tie to prevent the bolt from from turning itself loose again. Perhaps useful to others...
Huh, would never have considered addressing this unless I lost one too (which has never occurred).
Had a shop break them loose a couple months ago since I wasn't able to get them to turn. But, I acknowledge the probability since I just checked mine - one very snug, but the other looks like it backed out a turn or two...who'd of thought!
Took about 30 seconds to grab the zip ties and follow your lead. Thanks
I keep a large crescent wrench in my recovery gear bag and crank down hard on the eye bolt and keep them tight, protects them from losing them on the road and from thieves.
I recommend these after loosing a couple of my front bumper on my 4runner. These come with a little clip that prevents the bolt from rattling loose. Maybe u can just buy those clips separately also https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072V533FC...p_mob_ap_share
But I switched to soft shackles for recoveries much more versatile and safe. I.e. U can Hook longer ones around and axle.
I was filling up at a gas station once and a guy came over looking at my van checking out the aluminum front bumper and winch. He said that’s pretty sweet, Then he said I bet I could have it all off your van in under 3 minutes..... I stood there for a minutes and thought your probably right, 4 bolts on the bumper And you cut the cable going to the winch and it’s gone. We all pay for insurance for this stuff but it truly sucks that some people think they have a right to steal from others hard work and don’t care who they hurt alone the way. I’ve never had any issues with my van but most of my camping hike has been east of the Mississippi.
