Delco Remy High Output Alternator and Dynamic Torque Converter
Just sharing info for those considering 2nd Alternator set up -- Not an endorsement! -- I just like to go look up the specs. for new products when I see them.
Happened to notice that the Advanced-RV folks are not installing the Nation's Alternator and are now using the Delco Remy 40SI High Output Brushless Alternator--installed with their own dynamic torque converter.
Apparently, the Delco does not run as "hot" as the Nations under large load/high temp. I don't know if there is a failure rate data but I do believe the Nations starts shedding Amps. under high temps. (Delcos can be found on Fire Trucks -- quite the workhorse.)
They (ARV) have a you-tube video comparing it operation to the Nation's under no-/high-load and low-/high-idle conditions -- pretty smooth in operation. Seems clearly much easier on the belt, vibration and noise. The dynamic torque converter (the real innovation here, I think) seems like it would also be a lot easier on loading the engine, too.
Delco Remy has impressive specs. and size -- like 2X the size of the Nations! Don't think it will fit on just any rig. It is also 2X the cost of the Nations (!!) and the custom torque converter can't be too cheap either!
Still if you have the $$$ to burn and you need to burn lots of Amps. . . .
I believe ARV uses a Balmar Regulator -- I have not researched their regulator scheme in depth.
The torque converter is pretty amazing---really shows how the drive belt is subjected to forces undoubtedly leading to concerns they'll fail sooner than expected.
Yup, links work fine for me too. There are definately some awesome high output alternators out there and the torque converter looks like a great idea. Obvously, they won't fit our vans, but I see other applications that would be ideal, like my boat. Thanks for the links.
