We have been using an iNreach for the past few years for text communication. $60 for one month of unlimited texting. the keyboard is a bear, but if you bluetooth link to your phone its a simple deal.

The iridium sat coverage is fantastic. IMO the best there is.

Looking at getting one of these. And also getting the "AAA" for medical evacuation through GEOS Travel Safety Group. Any thought on those types of plans ?

Edit-. Seems that this coverage has been discussed. Any updates? Or anyone have to use it yet?

I picked up the Explorer & got it in last week. I'll get it activated over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Anybody ever had to call SOS for a stranger that needed help? Just curious how the liability for the costs would pan out in a situation like that. I don't see myself not calling in an SOS but it would be a bummer to get stuck with any costs if the injured refused to pay. Good Samaritan laws could punish you for not calling as well I suppose.

We did that for a solo female traveler stranded in the Black Rock Desert earlier this year.

They sent a tow company out. Your involvement is pretty much the same as calling for help in any other way for someone. If you see an accident on the side of the road you dial 911, right?

Good Samaritan laws are meant to protect us from being sued for helping someone in need. They won't punish you for not helping, not will they ensure your costs are covered. They were originally conceived to encourage medical professionals and others who were trained in CPR and emergency procedures to stop and help strangers on the street. There was a lot of worry in the early days that, should something go wrong, you could be successfully sued for a bad outcome, because medical folks would normally be required to have developed a professional relationship with a patient before treating them. It's been a boon to stranger-help. Whether any of these state laws have evolved further to cover other situations would be a useful research project.

I've been running the Explore for close to 2 years... 5 continents... Splitboard, climbing, mountain biking... It's done it's job well for what I've wanted out of it

And now they introduce the "mini" Inreach. Not sure I like that form factor. Probably works fine when using the app primarily.
