Hey Harry,

Was up at Lake George and checked out your rig at the launch. It's awesome. Was hoping you were around but no such luck. Beautiful SMB.

Has anyone come across a small rack that would fit over the cab in front of the penthouse top?

^^^ This idea! A compact rack in this location could also serve as a great fixture to mount some high-powered off-road trail lights to as well.

(....perhaps also incorporate into it one of those black sheet-plastic visor/aero panels like you see on the front of a lot of Yakima roof racks for bicycles (to smooth air flow over the crossbars and reduce whistling.))

That could be very cool looking....

EDIT:
Just looked at how much actual exposed van roof space there is in front of the penthouse.....not much! On my RB, it looks like perhaps 10 to 12 inches. That's pretty darn short for functional space.....unless you build a rack that cantilevers partially out over the windshield.

Still, could be a pretty cool place to lash down camp-style fold-into-a-bag chairs or something.

I've always viewed that section of roof as wasted space. I think some of the early Xterras had a small rack up front in addition to a larger rear rack.

Aluminess made one for the cutaway van IIRC.

With the penthouse front window zipping open what ever was stored in it would be very accessible. VW really fitted in that "wasted" space with their molded front basket.
