The Hi-Lift fits perfect in 48" under front bumper top rail if using Aluminess front bumper. (pic in my gallery) The plastic base is great to stabilize the jack or use as a leveling block.

I like to think of recovery in "steps."
Starting with your easiest and safest first like:
Air Pressure in tires
Traction mats
Kinetic Rope (2 vehicle situation)
Winch
Hi-Lift

Here was an example of where the wheel strap worked. Steve's spotter ran him up on to a set of rocks. He couldn't get a bottle jack in under the van because of rocks. Rather than tear up his underfloor storage and do more damage to the diff by me pulling him off, he used his Hi-Lift and wheel strap. The jack has a tendency to move and it looked like (if something went wrong) the bar might have gone right through the side of his van. With all the rock around he didn't need a footprint. The amount of pressure it takes to lift the van is fairly heavy and takes a bit of strength to operate. The handle is dangerous and can snap back like a chain binder if you've ever used one of those. It was just a matter of lifting the wheel and stack rocks so he could drive off the obstacle without damage (you can read about it here ). It sold me on the tool but have yet to use mine. We had other options but this was quicker.

Beach guys know when your down to your axles or if you ever had to pull someone out that is, there is only three things you can do. Get a good shovel and dig like hell or use a air bag jack (which is pricey $250) or a high lift jack with a wheel strap.
