Speedometer stuck

The speedometer in my 2011 E250 stuck at ~100km/hr even after stopping. The speedometer remained locked for the following short drive. It unstuck when I restarted and has been OK so far (a couple of short trips). Fortunately I was close to home and not on a long road.

Has anyone had this problem? If yes, what was the (hopefully easy) fix?

Speedometer stuck

It’s most likely a faulty speed sensor, not a big deal, but you’ll want to swap that out if it’s bad. Any other symptoms? Can cause issues with cruise control not working and transmission shifts. Pretty sure it’s located on the drivers side of the transmission towards the rear.
Might just be a loose connection too, unplug the wire harness from the sensor and make sure there’s no debris, shoot some dielectric spray on the contacts and plug it back in, see if that does the trick

Good advice REF, I was going to suggest calling in an exorcist.

I'm very curious - when the speedometer said 100mph, did the odometer turn over at that rate as well? Maybe these are separate systems, but if not that would be wild.

Ferris Bueller style, or reverse Ferris Bueller.

I’m in Canada - 100 kilometres per hour, not 100mph. 100mph in an Econoline would be interesting. I didn’t compare speedometer and odometer. The speedometer has worked as expected on a few trips since it froze. I’m going to apply dielectric grease to the connector and hope that is a fix.

Because it stuck even when the key was off, I would suspect a mechanical issue since I don't imagine there is any power to it with the key off. Perhaps the indicator needle just needs to be freed up and lubricated?

Good point. My van is in storage for about 5 months each Canadian winter. It’s not surprising that some things are reluctant to come out of hibernation. I’ve often wondered if it would be better to keep the van out for occasional drives over the winter.
