Re: Bullet proof question

Ah so, perhaps I misunderstood you then. I thought you were suggesting that the labor to do either job was roughly the same so one might as well do headstuds. My bad.

Labor was 2000 vs 3500 on my original quote (from a different mechanic) who later threw his back and did not do the job.
I read this thread with great interest and am wondering what you finally ended up doing, how did it turn out, and where did you have the work done (I live in Seattle).

Re: Bullet proof question

This project was fun and I highly and without hesitation endorse Robert Gaskell - Rob's Fleetservice NW. He only does 6.0 engines and does three overhauls a week as a solo person. Now hiring a partner for specific tasks. He was by far the best quality and best price of 4 diesel specialists in town. Easy to work with without the ego (once mechanic insisted on the air-oil cooler which would remove my winch and redesign my aluminess bumper -which I decided against).

Everything on my engine was replaced because of the headgasket issue.

This is an incomplete list but Rob will fill you in, most was previously listed on this thread:

Piston replacement, refinish cylinders of left bank, 3/8 injectors replaced, replaced Airdog motor (defective and now carry an extra--both re-design and more reliable), regulated fuel return with fuel pressure monitor. (I recommend his preferred monitor over Edge). Turbo with billet wheel, fender vents with engine wall modifications and paint, sinister diesel dual up pipe to turbo replacement with new redesign, ceramic coat and wrap; ceramic coat and wrap down pipe. Billet water pump, All engine internal upgrades and replacement (as 2010 built engine used some old 2003 parts), new seals all around. APR headstuds. (10K)

Previously done: egr delete, coolant filter, oil filter, tranny filter, custom air intake, 270A alternator, now replaced with 370A alternator both DC power (now have extra).

Most recent: Alternator replacement, F550 master cylinder + hydroboost.

Dropped my EGT 400*! I am unable to push 1000*.

He has customers from Olympic Peninsula, Oregon Coast, British Columbia

Uses a fork lift to remove the engine out the front without issue.

Zylstra will sell the custom air intake, if interested.

I can't agree with this enough, especially for the 6.0. If anything is even questionable, just get it done. I've had customers decline extra parts because of cost, only to be back in a shop 2 weeks later to pay for the same labor all over again.

I normally do construction risk management, but for a few years I was running a repair shop in Corvallis, and ended up specializing in 6.0's because the dealer in town is pretty inept at diesels, and everybody else was afraid of the 6.0 or didn't want to buy a proper diagnostics terminal. At the moment.... Corvallis is once again a bad place to live if you own a 6.0. Hubbard and Junction City are the closest places who are really qualified to work on them.
